Taylor had the photo taken as an engagement present for her third husband, Mike Todd, who she married in 1956. Her close friend, fellow actor Roddy McDowall, took the rather tasteful photo.
Sadly for the couple, Todd was killed a year later in a plane crash in New Mexico. A heartbroken Taylor then passed the photograph to her assistant, Penny Taylor, who held onto it for many years. In 1980 it ended up in the hands of Jim Shaudis, a private collector who kept it under wraps so tightly the photo was believed to be lost.
Following Taylor's death two weeks ago, Shaudis decided to publicly release the photo, which depicts Taylor kneeling nude on a fur rug.
